Sagavägen - a journey from the world heritage to world heritage

Sagavägen runs from Örnsköldsvik by the Baltic Sea to Åsele, Vilhelmina, Kittelfjäll and then on towards Norway. The journey takes you from the World Heritage High Coast in Sweden to the World Heritage Vega on the coast in Norway. When you travel along the Sagavägen, you get to take part in sea environments, forest landscapes and mountain environments that create contrasts with varied nature experiences and with visits to small genuine villages along the way that invite you to take part in the local nature and culture.

Here there are numerous fairy-tale trails, places to visit and rest areas to stop at that tell about the local nature and culture.

Lokal culture

If you want to learn more about our local nature and culture, we suggest a few stops in our valley. Stop by the church in Dikanäs, which is one of Vilhelmina parish's oldest preserved churches, our local village museum or take a short hike to one of our Sami villages or the Vojmåstigen, which tells you more about local plants and their areas of use.

Fauna & flora

Plants have long been used in cooking and as medicinal plants in Kittelfjäll there is a hiking trail with information boards that tell about the valley's local plants and their areas of use. The hike also takes you to Marsfjällen nature reserve, where on the south side there are reddish-brown serpentine moraines where bare mountain sedge grows among twisted pines.

Sami Culture

In the valley there are preserved Sami residences, one of them is Silisen's Sami residence, which was long used as a spring and autumn residence when the Sami herded the reindeer between the different grazing lands, where they stopped and rested, let the reindeer graze and then continued their journey to summer or winter areas.

Local Culture

At Bygdegården in Henriksfjäll is our local village museum, where you can learn more about the settler culture and the people who lived here in the past & now, with stories about the villages and about what it was like to grow up and live in the mountain countryside during the 20th century. Bygdegården is open during the summer in the museum and also has a summer cafe and flea market.

Churches

When this was still undeveloped land, people traveled on water and winter roads, and one of the more important in the county passed Dikanäs on the way to Norway. Today it follows Sagavägen where it passes the village of Dikanäs. Settlers and the permanent Sami in Vojmådalen received permission in 1829 to erect their own chapel. Today, Dikanäs church is one of Vilhelmina parish's oldest preserved churches. There are a total of 7 churches in Vilhelmina municipality alone.

Local tales and legends

Sagavägen gets its name from the local stories and legends that are told in the villages and takes you on an exciting journey where you get to take part in the local tales from the area that have been told for generations. To highlight these fairy tales, there are trails & rest areas along the way where the visitor can take part in tales & legends about vittra, stable people, giants and other creatures and maybe you can see them if you look really closely.

Sagostig Kittelfjäll

Starting at the sågforsen, you walk along Vojmån and get to take part in local tales and stories from the area and together look for small fairy-tale creatures and animals that are painted in the forest.

Sagostig Rönnäs

In Kvarnbäcken, which is right next to the village of Rönnäs, you will find "Näcken" being played in the stream. There is also an exciting trail with stories and paintings.

Sagostig Vilhelmina

Up on Kyrkberget, right next to the Samevistet in Vilhelmina, stand the trolls Tallus & Tallina and welcome you to follow the fantasy-evoking fairy tale path.

Sagostig Dikanäs

This path takes you into the forest and you will find painted figures from the local tales. Among other things, here is Stalo, who was a mean giant who tried to deceive the Sami and often fell for his own grasp.

The story of the Mountain King & his daughter

The giants from the northern mountains met the giants from the eastern sea in a battle of life and death between Åsele and Krötselberget and the giants fought until the mountain giants were defeated. The mountain king stood there alone and in his despair he uprooted a large pine tree which he threw at his enemies. The mountain king did not notice that his daughter whom he loved so much stood in the way, and she was hit and died.

His tears filled the entire valley from Lapland's highest mountain right down to the sea.

The Mountain King climbed onto Borkan's highest peak and struck with his hammer so that the sparks flew and half of Borkan's highest peak fell and struck a hideously deep pit in the ground. The giant lifted it up and placed it opposite so that it would become a king's daughter's resting bed.

When he lifted the block, there was such a deep pit where the stone had fallen that when it was filled with the Mountain King's tears, it became a great long lake. Then the Mountain King said that your name should be Borkajaur and that is still the name of the lake today.

The mountain king's daughter was laid there on a bed and all the flowers of the mountains became her blanket. Torches were lit which burned the ground far and wide and there was a roar in space, for it was the burial of the Mountain King's daughter.

Even today you can see the Bergakungen's daughter lying stretched out on Kittelfjället's highest peak, and at the foot of the hill that plunges down towards the lake and towards the country road, the cracked rust-red outcrops look like after a fire. The ashes were sown around the hills and in the valley that will glow red until the day of judgment, next to the Mountain King.

This is an excerpt from the story of the Giants and the Bergakungen's daughter's Sarkophagus, which can be found in the book Sagor från Vilhelmina, written after Lisa Johansson. You can read thewhole  story along the Sagostigen in Kittelfjäll.
